Chapter Thirty-Two

AURORO VS BENAVIEW

After ordering her guards into the outer ring of the manor, Benaview guided me into its depths, taking me down several flights of stairs.

Dear goddess—these people and their rituals.

"You're slowly starting to really appreciate how annoying old elves can be."

Hey, are you still following us?

"No. I'm at the top of the stairs. Now that Benaview ordered her guards out of the inner manor, I'm going to do some more visible snooping. You'll be on your own for a while."

Got it. Good luck.

"Same to you."

"Auroro," Benaview said, "what weapon are you proficient with?"

"I own a glaive."

"I see… I'm not very good with those… Might we use rapiers instead?"

"Yeah, sure."

Valk had explained it to me while I waited for Benaview. A Humbling was another ritual that a Noble of Blood could be challenged to. This one was designed to allow commoners to challenge a noble's judgment… or something. Originally, the noble and the commoner would have a duel before a god to settle a dispute. It was a friendly duel, with no threat of death attached. If the commoner won, they could demand that the noble change course on some policy or decision, and the noble would have to accept. If the noble won, they could demand some sort of compensation from the commoner to penalize them for wasting the noble's time. On paper, the practice was observed because "those blessed by the gods should be considerate of those not." It made the Noble of Blood feel altruistic and superior simultaneously.

In Valk's opinion, the gods concocted the challenge because they were bored and wanted some excitement.

I shook my head at the absurdity of being unable to say 'no' to things like this. "You know, Lady Benaview, the more I get to know you, the more I understand why Veerie is the way she is."

She snickered. "Flattery will get you nowhere, young man."

"... That wasn't a compliment," I dryly replied.

I was happy to be sneaking lust into her body as we went down the stairs.
